The signs and symptoms of male pattern baldness
Once you hit puberty the clock starts ticking. It’s usually after this that some men begin to see signs of hair loss or a receding hairline. While it’s completely normal (like we said, 50% of guys over 50 experience male pattern hair loss, so you’re in good company), hair loss may cause significant psychological difficulties and strain on a person, which is something we’re trying to fix.
Symptoms of hair loss can include:
- A receding frontal hairline
- Gradual loss of hair from the top of the head
- Thinning or shorter hair strands
- Circular or patchy bald spots
What causes male pattern hair loss?
Hair loss all starts with genetics and a little hormone called dihydrotestosterone (hard to say, easy to get). A rowdy specimen, DHT is extracted from testosterone with the help of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. It starts stirring up trouble with your hair follicles, weakening them to become smaller and shortening your hairs natural growth cycle until your follicles stop producing hair entirely. You wouldn’t invite DHT to a house party, so why settle for it on your prime real estate?
HOW TO TREAT HAIR LOSS?
Beat your hair loss with our medically proven range of hair loss treatments. We will have your prescription home-delivered to get you back in the game in no time at all.
How does our hair loss treatment work?
We halt hair loss with finasteride tablets (same active ingredient as Propecia) which blocks the 5-alpha reductase enzyme from converting testosterone to the rowdy hormone DHT, helping to reduce hair loss and possibly aid regrowth. Finasteride is an FDA approved prescription drug that has been medically proven to treat hair loss in men.
We also offer minoxidil (Rogaine), a topical treatment that improves the flow of blood, oxygen, and nutrients to your follicles, keeping them open and healthy, and helping them to produce new, thicker and longer hairs. Minoxidil is FDA approved and has been found to promote hair growth for the majority of men in extensive clinical trials.
Finasteride and minoxidil can be used at the same time, just make sure you tell our doctors if you plan to take them together.
To top off our hair loss trio, we have biotin. A vitamin supplement found to not only improve the quality of your hair, but your skin and nails too.
To access our hair loss treatments, simply start an online consultation and our doctors will assess your condition and, if approved, they will prescribe your hair loss treatment.

Yes. It’s believed that MPB (male pattern baldness) can be inherited from one or both parents. Whilst the genetic influence is slightly more dominant on the mother’s side, research has found that having a bald father also increases your chances of developing hair loss. So no pointing the finger at just one parent.
MPB is usually identified by the gradual loss of hair on the top of the scalp or at the front of the head, also known as a receding hairline. Most men experience an “M” shaped hairline, where the temples recede more than the middle section. A doctor can assess whether there is a family history of hair loss, and perform tests including blood tests and a scalp biopsy to determine whether there are any other factors at play.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for MPB. However, it often progresses very slowly, usually over several years – so there’s a good opportunity to beat balding to the punch with effective hair loss treatments.
Hair follicles under the skin produce a single strand of hair at a rate of about 1 cm each month. The hair will grow for about 2-4 years (growth phase) and then stop for the next 2-4 years (resting phase) after which it falls out. The same hair follicle then produces a new strand of hair and the cycle begins again. As a result of this cycle your hair is always at various stages of growing, resting or falling out; and that is why it is normal for you to lose anywhere from 50 to 100 hair strands every day.
Finasteride is a highly effective hair loss treatment and is medically proven to be safe to use. As with all medications side effects are possible, and studies have shown that in a small percentage of patients finasteride may cause erectile dysfunction or decrease the amount of semen released. The effects are reversible, and the amount and quality of semen can return to normal after stopping the medicine. Finasteride may also cause changes in breast tissue (such as lumps, pain or swollen nipples) that may indicate breast cancer and should be reported to your doctor.
There are a few ways you can help to improve the condition or health of your hair to reduce hair loss, which are:
- Wash your hair regularly with a mild shampoo to keep the scalp and the hair clean and free of dandruff.
- Taking vitamin supplements can be good for your hair. Vitamin A promotes the production of hair oils, whilst vitamin B helps to maintain its healthy colour.
- Eat a protein rich diet, including lean meats, fish, soy or other proteins.
- Massage your scalp with essential oils to stimulate the hair follicles and improve circulation.
- Avoid brushing or combing your hair when it is wet, because this is when it is weakest and can snap easily.
- Keep yourself and your hair well hydrated, by drinking lots of water, avoiding alcohol and reducing the use of hair dryers or hot styling tools.
- Stay physically active and avoid smoking.
- Minimise stress.
Around 85% of American men experience significant hair loss by the age of 50. But this issue affects millennials as well, with approximately 25% of men suffering from male pattern baldness showing hair loss symptoms before they turn 21. So don’t panic, young man. It’s normal.
