WHAT IS TRECLIN?
Treclin gel is a prescription only topical gel used to treat skin conditions like acne.
Treclin combines clindamycin, which is an antibiotic that prevents bacterial growth, reducing infection and inflammation, and tretinoin which is a form of vitamin A and reduces the amount of oil (sebum) produced by the skin. Treclin is MHRA approved to treat acne.
WHAT IS TRECLIN GEL USED FOR?
Treclin gel is prescribed to treat severe acne in adults and children over the age of 12 years. Yes, it starts early. You already knew that, right? You have to apply the gel daily and keep using it for some weeks before you see the results.
HOW DOES TRECLIN WORK?
Treclin gel is a dual action medicine containing two active ingredients. The first is clindamycin, an antibiotic which kills the bacteria on the skin that causes spots. The second ingredient is tretinoin which works to improve the skin at a cellular level, helping your skin to to shed dead skin cells rather than letting them block your follicles.
Acne can not only cause physical effects, but it can also sometimes affect a persons confidence and make them feel unhappy with their skin. Treclin gel is a simple and efficient way of treating the physical effects of acne, which in turn can also help with the mental effects too.
It may take up to 12 weeks of continuous use before you start to see the benefits and improvements to your skin. Do not stop using the gel once your acne clears.
Treclin gel contains clindamycin 10mg/g and tretinoin 0.25mg/g. The recommended dose that you should use is a pea-sized amount of gel, applied daily. If you forget to apply treclin gel one day, skip the forgotton dose and continue as normal. Don’t double dose to make up for a missed one as this could increase the risk of side effects. Treclin is a longer term treatment, so it is important that you continue to take it as prescribed.

Treclin gel should always be applied to clean skin, so wash your face using a gentle soap and some warm water. Pat your skin dry with a soft towel. Squeeze out a pea-sized blob onto your finger tip. Dap the gel onto your forehead, chin, nose and cheeks. Gently spread the gel over the whole face using the tips of your fingers.
Do not use more that the recommended amount. You will not get better or faster results by using more gel. Using too much gel may irritate the skin and cause redness and peeling. If this happens you should stop using the gel, allow the skin time to recover and then try again.
If you forget to apply the gel at bedtime, don’t apply a double dose to make up for the forgotten dose. Just continue to apply it as you normally would at the usual time.
Using more than the recommended dose of treclin won’t make your acne disappear any faster. However it could increase the risks of side effects. It is important that you take treclin exactly as prescribed to you.
Once opened, treclin should be discarded after 3 months. The tube should be kept tightly closed between applications.
Do not apply the gel at the same time as other creams or cosmetic products. The best time to use the gel is after you have cleansed and removed any makeup, which is usually just before you go to bed.
Treclin will make your skin more sensitive to light. Apply an effective sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 and wear protective clothing (like a hat) if you are spending time outdoors in the sun. If you get sunburnt, you should stop using the gel and allow your skin to heal before starting again.
Treclin is generally a safe and well tolerated treatment for acne. However like all medications, side effects are possible. The most common side effects of treclin include dry skin, redness of the skin, a rash, itchy skin or sunburn. For more information on treclin side effects, please read the patient information leaflet.
Avoid applying the gel to the mouth, eyes and mucous membranes. Don’t use the gel on areas with eczema or to exposed or damaged skin. If the product is accidentally applied to the eyes, rinse the area thoroughly with warm water. Avoid exposure to sunlight or the use of artificial light (such as tanning beds, sunlamps etc) because the gel will make your skin more sensitive to light and you will burn more easily.
