What is Rogaine for men?
Rogaine is a medicine that contains the active ingredient minoxidil. It is used to treat male pattern baldness, the most common type of hair loss in men, including young men. Rogaine is applied topically, which means you put it directly on your scalp, either as a foam or a liquid, and it helps to stop hair loss and encourage the growth of new hair.
How does Rogaine work?
Male pattern baldness happens when your hair follicles (the holes in your scalp from which your hair grows) shrink over time. As the follicles shrink, your hairs become thinner and shorter until no hair emerges at all. Rogaine counters this by improving the flow of blood, oxygen, and nutrients to your hair follicles, helping them to produce new, thicker and longer hairs.
HOW LONG DOES ROGAINE TAKE TO WORK?
It usually takes between two to four months for you to see results with Rogaine. The treatment will start working right away, but your hair goes through a growth cycle, so it can take time for old hairs to fall out and be replaced with new, thicker, longer ones. Rogaine works best if you use it consistently every day, without taking breaks, but if you don’t see any improvement after four months, speak to our doctors who will be able to offer their advice.
When it comes to hair loss, there’s a long history of scam products and fake baldness cures, but Rogaine is an exception. It works. Rogaine contains the active ingredient minoxidil, and clinical trials and independent research have repeatedly shown minoxidil promotes hair growth in the majority of men, often is as little as two to four months.
If your receding hairline is caused by male pattern baldness, rather than a disease or a nutritional deficiency, then Rogaine should be able to help. By improving the flow of blood, oxygen, and nutrients to your hair follicles, Rogaine can stimulate them to produce new, thicker hairs.
As soon as possible. Rogaine is most effective at fighting baldness when it’s used in the early stages of hair loss. It’s also most effective in men under 40. If you’re developing male pattern baldness, then the sooner you start using Rogaine, the more effectively you’ll fight it.
You should always use Rogaine exactly as described in the leaflet that comes with the product. You usually apply Rogaine once or twice a day directly to your scalp when your hair is dry.
Rogaine is a long term treatment for male pattern baldness and should be applied every day. If you stop using Rogaine, the normal hair loss process will resume and you’ll likely lose the hair that you have gained.
If you forget to apply Rogaine one day, just skip it and continue as normal. You shouldn’t double dose to make up for missing one as this will not make it more effective and may increase the risks of side effects.
No. You don’t need to shampoo your hair before using Rogaine, just make sure your hair and scalp is dry when you apply it. You can continue to wash your hair as you normally would. If you notice your scalp becoming dry and flaky, you may have to use a mild, gentle shampoo though.
We recommend not getting your hair wet for at least 4 hours after using Rogaine. It is fine to go swimming if you are using Rogaine, but try to wait for 4 hours between applying and getting your hair wet.
You can continue using whatever styling products you want when you use Rogaine, but for the best results make sure the Rogaine has been fully absorbed and your scalp has dried before you apply them.
Your hair goes through a growth cycle, and it can take a little time for you to shed the old hairs and grow new, thicker ones, so it can take up to four months for you to see the results of Rogaine. Rogaine will work best if you use it as directed, and if you use it consistently every day. If you don’t see any improvement after four months, you should speak to our doctors.
As with all medications, Rogaine can have side effects. Not everyone will experience them though, and the most common side effects tend to be mild, like skin irritation on the scalp (itching, dryness, and rashes), headaches, and increased facial hair growth. You can read about the reported side effects of Rogaine in more detail below, or in the leaflet that comes with your product. Talk to our doctors if you have any concerns about them.
When you first begin using Rogaine, you can experience a period of increased hair loss, called Rogaine shedding, as your scalp gets rid of the older hairs to make way for the new ones. Don’t worry if this happens to you, it’s usually a sign that your Rogaine is working. Rogaine shedding typically happens between two to six weeks after you first start using it. Speak to our doctors if it lasts for longer.
If you stop taking Rogaine, the supply of blood, nutrients, and oxygen to your hair follicles will decline, they’ll start to shrink, and your hair loss will begin again. You may lose all your gains within three to four months, and then you’ll continue to go bald as you did before using Rogaine. If you want to fight male pattern baldness for as long as you can, you need to make Rogaine a permanent part of your daily routine.
There are no clinical studies into the long term use of Rogaine. However Rogaine is considered safe to use long term, and if you don’t experience any side effects it should be safe to continue using it. Remember it can take around 4 months to start seeing results from Rogaine, and if you stop taking it your hair loss will resume.
The active ingredient in Rogaine (the drug which encourages the hair growth) is called minoxidil. Rogaine contains other ingredients that help it to be absorbed in your skin and to form either the foam or the solution it comes in, like ethanol, purified water, and citric acid. You can find a full list of Rogaine ingredients in the leaflet that comes with your Rogaine product.
Finasteride, also called Propecia, is another effective treatment for male pattern baldness. Unlike Rogaine, it’s taken orally, usually as a pill. The two drugs work differently, and research hasn’t found any negative interactions between finasteride and Rogaine, and even better, studies have found they can be more effective when used together. Finasteride is a prescription med, so make sure you tell our doctors if you plan to take it alongside Rogaine.
