What is Biotin?
Biotin is a vitamin, usually called vitamin B7, but sometimes also known as vitamin H. Your body needs biotin for a wide range of processes. It helps you break down the food you eat, it influences the growth of your cells, and it even helps you maintain a stable blood sugar level. Biotin also helps keep your hair, nails, and skin healthy. Not getting enough biotin (biotin deficiency) can give you red and scaly skin, brittle nails, and it can make your hair thin and fall out. Taking biotin may also help men who are experiencing hair loss.
What does biotin do for hair?
Your hair is made up of different materials, but the most important of these is called keratin. Keratin is a structural protein, it gives your hair its shape, it also makes it supple, elastic, and it protects it from damage. Short story, having enough keratin is really important for having healthy hair. And here’s where biotin helps. Biotin plays an important role in keratin production. You need enough keratin for healthy hair, and you need biotin to make keratin.
Will taking biotin supplements improve the quality of my hair?
Most people get enough biotin in their diets to produce the keratin they need for healthy hair, but what about if you take extra biotin? Will this improve the quality of your hair, and will it help if you’re losing your hair? To date, there’s not been a huge amount of scientific research on the benefits of biotin for hair quality and loss, although the early results are promising. In a review of 18 studies on biotin, all 18 found biotin supplements improved the quality of patients’ hair, usually resulting in more and thicker hair. In all 18 studies the patients had hair issues, like thinning and hair loss, so biotin may help if you’re losing hair, but it’s too early to say if biotin can improve the quality of already healthy hair.
Biotin is most often taken as a supplement in capsule or tablet form, sometimes also called biotin vitamins. You should always take supplements as directed on their packaging, but usually you swallow a biotin supplement once a day with a glass of water.
There’s no conclusive research on how much biotin you should take to improve your hair growth. You can buy biotin hair growth supplements in a range of strengths; 1000 mcg and 5000 mcg are common. Experiment to find which strength works best for you.
Again, research is limited on this, but two studies reported a reduction in hair loss, as well as gains in areas where hair was previously lost in as little as 90 days. Everyone reacts differently to supplements, so how quickly you respond to biotin may vary from this. Your hair goes through a growth cycle where old hairs are shed and new ones replace them, and it can take a number of months before your scalp begins to produce new hairs after you’ve started taking biotin.
The active drug in Propecia is called finasteride. This is the substance which reduces DHT in your scalp. Propecia tablets contain other ingredients too, to help the medication work after you swallow it. You can find a list of these ingredients in the patient leaflet included in the packaging with the tablets.
Biotin has no known interactions with other hair loss drugs or medications like minoxidil (Rogaine), finasteride (Propecia), so you could use biotin alongside these treatments as part of your daily hair health routine. When purchasing hair loss medication through FROM MARS, make sure you tell us about all other drugs and supplements you’re taking, or plan to take, to make sure you get the benefit of our expertise.
Biotin, or vitamin H, is important for the overall health of your hair, skin and nails. It can help you to maintain healthy, shiny hair as well as strengthen brittle nails. It also supports the enzymes involved in the metabolism of carbs, fats, and protein for energy production.
