WHAT IS GENITAL HERPES?

Genital herpes is a viral infection that can cause blisters to form on the skin on and around the genitals and buttocks. In men these blisters can appear on the penis and scrotum, around the anus, and across the buttocks. Usually, the symptoms of genital herpes progress like this:

  • The infected area of skin starts to tingle or itch before any blisters emerge
  • Hard and painful spots appear on the skin, and they grow into blisters, often filled with a clear fluid
  • The blisters burst to become sores, leaking fluid which then dries and forms a crust
  • Over time the blisters heal, and the skin is left unscarred

CAUSES OF GENITAL HERPES

Genital herpes is caused by an infection of a herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two HSV infections that can cause genital herpes with HSV-2 being the most common virus. However, the HSV-1 virus that causes cold sores (also known as fever blisters) on the face can also cause genital herpes.

Both of the herpes simplex viruses are transmitted between people by skin-to-skin contact. Once on someone’s skin, they get into the body through openings like the mouth, vagina, or anus. The virus then infects the cells around the opening, causing the blisters to erupt on the skin.

Your body will fight the virus, with the blisters usually clearing up after a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, that’s not the end of it. Your body hasn’t actually defeated the virus because it infects the nerve cells in the skin. The virus can go dormant; it will go to sleep and hide from your immune system and medication.

The bad news is that the virus stays in these nerve cells for life. The good news is that most of the time it doesn’t show any symptoms. However it can reactivate at any time, causing another outbreak of blisters. These outbreaks can be triggered by:

  • Stress
  • Fatigue
  • Another infection
  • Weakened immune system
  • Changes in hormones

Symptoms of Genital Herpes

The following symptoms can also accompany an outbreak of genital herpes, particularly the first time:

  • Headache
  • Body aches
  • Fever
  • Swollen glands

If you’re infected with the virus that causes genital herpes, it stays in your body. This means that after the first outbreak of blisters clears up, you will still be infected as the virus is able to become active again and cause another outbreak of blisters. On average, outbreaks happen again four to five times in the first two years of infection, but over time they tend to become less frequent and less severe. Medications like valacyclovir (also sold under the brand name Valtrex) can help to manage future outbreaks by limiting their severity, and by helping your body clear them up faster.

Herpes infections are passed between people most often by skin-to-skin contact, and because genital herpes can be transmitted by sex it’s classed as a sexually transmitted disease (STD). It’s one of the most common STDs, with an estimated 3.7 billion people under the age of 50 worldwide thought to be infected by the two herpes viruses that cause genital herpes.

OTHER COMMON
QUESTIONS

What are the symptoms of genital herpes?

Most commonly, you’ll get blisters on and around the genitals and surrounding areas if you have genital herpes. These blisters are often itchy, and they may burst and leak a clear fluid.

Blisters can also occur in other affected areas at the same time, like on the lips and in the mouth. Sometimes the infected area may itch or tingle for a couple of days before the blisters form, and this can serve as a warning that an outbreak is coming. Once the blisters have formed, they can be itchy, painful, and the surrounding area can swell.

The first outbreak is often the worst, and it can also be accompanied by a fever, swollen glands, muscle pain, and headaches. Any subsequent outbreaks are usually less severe with these other symptoms less likely to accompany the blisters.

How is genital herpes transmitted?

Genital herpes is usually transmitted by skin-to-skin contact. When a person has an outbreak, the virus comes to the surface and lives on the skin on and around the blisters, as well as in the fluid they leak. If someone touches an infected area, the virus can be passed to their skin, and it can infect them by getting into their body. Genital herpes is most often transmitted by vaginal, anal, and oral sex, or when fingers touch an infected area and then another person.

Herpes simplex viruses can also be found in the bodily fluids of infected people, including their semen, meaning genital herpes can be passed to a sexual partner even when the blisters aren’t present.

Genital herpes isn’t normally passed by touching objects an infected person has used, such as sharing a towel or sitting on a toilet seat, as the virus dies quickly when away from the body. It can be passed by sharing sex toys with a partner though.

Can cold sores cause genital herpes?

Yes. A cold sore is a blister on someone’s mouth or lips caused by oral herpes. A herpes infection can be passed to a partner if someone with cold sores performs oral sex on them.

The virus can also be passed by touching cold sores and then touching genitals, so care must also be taken to wash your hands often with antibacterial handwash if you spend time with someone with cold sores, or if you have them yourself.

How long does genital herpes last?

Outbreaks of genital herpes usually last from between two to four weeks. Less severe outbreaks, with only a few small blisters may heal in less than a week, while more severe outbreaks can take longer than four weeks to clear. The first outbreak is usually the worst. As time passes they tend to become less frequent and less severe.

Can genital herpes be cured?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for genital herpes. Once the virus infects your body, it’s a part of you. Because the virus goes dormant for long periods inside the nerve cells in your skin, it effectively hides from both your immune system and medication. When the virus reactivates and spreads through your skin cells, your body and any medication you take will fight the infection, but even after the outbreak has been cleared up the virus will remain in your nerve cells.

What does Valtrex do for herpes?

Valtrex is an antiviral medication used to manage outbreaks of herpes. Its active ingredient is valaciclovir. It’s usually swallowed as a pill and it works by stopping the virus from copying itself, slowing its spread through the skin cells and helping the immune system to clear the infection faster. It can be taken daily to help prevent outbreaks from occurring.
