What is sildenafil?
Sildenafil is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction. You may know it as the brand name ‘Viagra’, but the active ingredient is sildenafil which works by increasing blood flow to the penis to quickly improve your ability to get and maintain an erection.
Sildenafil is just as effective as Viagra and it is FDA approved to treat erectile dysfunction. It doesn’t matter if you experience erectile dysfunction in your twenties or when you are over 40, it’s hard work made easy.
How does sildenafil work?
Sildenafil works by improving blood flow to the penis to help men get and maintain an erection. Taking sildenafil will not cause an erection, you will need to be aroused for the drug to work.
How to take sildenafil
Take 1 tablet whole with a little water about an hour before sex. Sildenafil can be taken with or without food. If you take Sildenafil on a full stomach or after eating a fatty meal, the medication may take longer to start working.
How long does sildenafil last?
Sildenafil is formulated to last up to four hours – but typically, most men say they experience the effects for about two to three hours.
Ingredients
The active substance is sildenafil. Each tablet contains 25 mg, 50 mg or 100 mg of sildenafil (as the citrate salt). Tablet core: microcrystalline cellulose, calcium hydrogen phosphate (anhydrous), croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate. Film coat: hypromellose, titanium dioxide (E171), lactose monohydrate, triacetin, indigo carmine aluminium lake (E132).
Sildenafil is the medical name for Viagra and is sometimes called ‘generic Viagra’. Viagra is the brand which was marketed by Pfizer in 1998, however, the active ingredient in Viagra is sildenafil. When the patent for Viagra expired in 2013, other drug manufacturers were able to copy the medication and sell it as sildenafil or generic Viagra for a lower price. This made sildenafil a popular and more affordable ED treatment.
It usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes for sildenafil to work. You can take it up to four hours before you want to have sex.
The usual starting dose for men is 50mg. Sildenafil is available in 25mg, 50mg and 100mg strength tablets. Our licensed doctors will determine the correct dosage for you.
On some occasions, your body may not respond as well to the medication. If you have eaten a big meal or drank a large amount of alcohol, sildenafil can be less effective. You also must be sexually aroused for the medication to work. If sildenafil doesn’t work, you should try again (after 24 hours) with the same strength tablet. If the medication continues to not work for you, contact our doctors who may change your dosage or prescribe a different ED medication.
Drinking alcohol with sildenafil can reduce your ability to get and maintain an erection. Alcohol can also make it more likely that you will experience certain side effects including dizziness and headaches. It is therefore best not to drink alcohol before taking sildenafil.
You should not take more than one tablet a day. Taking more than 1 tablet will increase the risk of side effects and possibly their severity.
Sildenafil is safe to be taken daily, however, the medication should not be taken more than once in 24 hours.
No, taking sildenafil with other ED meds can increase the risk of overdose and can potentially lead to dangerous side effects. You must wait at least 24 hours between taking a sildenafil or Levitra tablet, or 48 hours after taking Cialis. Can I take sildenafil with other ED medications?
Do not take the product with grapefruits or grapefruit juice as this can increase the levels of the drug in your body and may affect how the medicine works.
Sildenafil will help you get and maintain an erection, but you will need to be sexually aroused. To help, you and your partner could engage in some foreplay to give the tablet time to work and to help you become sexually stimulated. It’s important to relax.
Sildenafil may not always work the first time you try to use it. For most men, the tablets are more effective after the second dose. If you are unsuccessful, wait 24 hours and try again. Remember, you can’t take more than one tablet a day. If it has been a while since you had an erection, it may take your body a few doses before you start to respond and see the benefits.
Do not take more than one tablet a day, even if you feel the drug is not working for you. If you take more tablets than you should, you increase the risk of experiencing serious side effects. If you feel the strength you are taking is too weak, then you should talk to our doctors who may recommend a higher dose for you. It is important to manage any increase in dose and monitor your response after each change in dose.
Sexual activity can put further strain on the heart, so it is important to check with your doctor first if you get very breathless or feel any chest pain when you partake in light to moderate physical activity, such as climbing the stairs or taking a brisk walk.
The most commonly reported side effects of sildenafil include:
- headaches
- nausea
- a sudden feeling of heat in your upper body
- indigestion
- visual disturbances
- dizziness
- a stuffy nose
they are usually mild and don’t last for long. If you experience any side effects or an increase in the severity of a side effect, you should stop taking the medication.
Both medicines have the same active ingredient known as sildenafil citrate and will have the same effect. The main difference between sildenafil and Viagra is pricing. Viagra is the original product and the brand name for Pfizer’s tablet. However, cheaper alternatives are available as generic products are made by a number of different manufacturers. It contains the same active ingredient as the original brand name Viagra, manufactured by Pfizer.
Sildenafil tablets should always be stored in the pouches or in the provided vial and should only be removed when you are taking your next dose. The tablets can be stored in a clean, dry place at room temperature. Do not share your medicine with anyone else. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
Sildenafil tablets should never be used past the expiry date which is printed on the pouch after the letters EXP. The expiry date is always the last day of the month shown on the packaging, after which it should be discarded.
Do not flush sildenafil tablets down the toilet or empty them down the drain as this will contaminate water and could affect the environment. We recommend that all medicines be returned to your local pharmacy for disposal.
