Overview
What is Propecia?
Propecia is a medication used to treat male pattern baldness, the most common cause of hair loss in men. Propecia can be taken by men over the age of 18, so if you see that hairline receding or you’re thinning on top, don’t worry, we’ve got you.
How does Propecia work?
Male pattern baldness is caused by a hormone called DHT which shrinks and blocks the follicles in your scalp which your hair grows out of. Propecia reduces DHT levels in your scalp, allowing your hair follicles to keep producing thick, long, full hair.
HOW LONG DOES PROPECIA TAKE TO WORK?
Propecia starts working as soon as you take it. You’ll usually have to wait a couple of months until you see visible differences as it takes time for your head to produce new hairs. Hair can look fuller and thicker after only three months, but six to nine months is more typical.
FAQ
The active ingredient in Propecia is finasteride. It is this active ingredient that is sometimes referred to as ‘generic Propecia’. Finasteride is also sold as a cheaper alternative to Propecia. The two treatments are medically the same and both contain the same amount of the active ingredient. Propecia is the brand name given by the original manufacturers.
Propecia contains a drug called finasteride that reduces the amount of the baldness causing hormone (DHT) in your scalp. This prevents further hair loss, and for many men, it can help hair regrow and increase in thickness.
Propecia is medically proven to halt and reverse male pattern baldness. How well it works varies by person and it depends on the dose taken, but in clinical studies it was found that 83% men experienced no further hair loss after 2 years of treatment. Also, 66% of men showed an improvement in hair growth. Propecia is most effective in men with mild to moderate hair loss, so the earlier you start treatment the better your results should be.
Typically it takes around 3 to 6 months of continuous use for men to see results. If you stop taking Propecia, your hair loss will return. Propecia is effective in treating hair loss caused by male pattern baldness, however it is not effective for other types of hair loss such as a receding hairline.
It usually takes around 3 to 6 months for men to see results.
No, Propecia is only effective on areas of the scalp that still have some hair growth. It will not work on areas that are completely bald.
Propecia works for as long as you take it. If you stop taking Propecia, DHT levels will build up in the scalp again, and your hair will start to thin and recede once more. Long term studies show Propecia continues to be effective over time.
Yes, Propecia is usually prescribed as a long term medication. If you stop taking Propecia your hair loss will return.
The active drug in Propecia is called finasteride. This is the substance which reduces DHT in your scalp. Propecia tablets contain other ingredients too, to help the medication work after you swallow it. You can find a list of these ingredients in the patient leaflet included in the packaging with the tablets.
Propecia is taken as a tablet, usually swallowed with water. The recommended dose is typically one tablet a day, but always take Propecia exactly as directed. You should continue to take Propecia for the medication to work. If you stop taking Propecia your hair loss will resume and you will lose the hair you have grown.
There is no best time of day to take Propecia, but try to make sure you take it at the same time every day so you have 24 hours between each dose. You should make taking Propecia part of your daily routine, so it becomes a habit you don’t need to remember.
If you forget to take your Propecia tablet do not double dose to make up for it. Just take your tablet as soon as you remember and continue as normal.
Yes. Propecia can be taken with or without food.
Propecia is not known to cause any side effects that can affect your ability to drive or use machinery.
Side effects are uncommon, but sometimes Propecia can cause a rash on the skin. This is usually mild and will heal over time.
Propecia has been found to cause erectile dysfunction in around 1 out of 100 men. This side effect should stop after discontinuation of use. There have been no long term studies into the impact on Propecia on fertility, however, poor semen quality is listed as a potential side effect. Again this should stop if you stop using Propecia.
No, Propecia is not effective for the treatment of hair loss in women, and it can be dangerous for pregnant women to touch.
Propecia and finasteride are both taken as tablets, they contain the same active drug and they work in the same way. They are both brand names of the same drug.

Propecia Contraindications
DO NOT take Propecia if you are:
- A woman (these meds are for men). Finasteride has been found to pose a risk to unborn babies so the tablets must not be handled by women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.
- Under 18 years of age
- Allergic to finasteride or any other ingredient in the medication (see the ingredients list in the leaflet inside the Propecia packaging for more details)
- Taking finasteride or dutasteride for a prostate problem called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
Talk to our doctors at FROM MARS if you’re unsure if you can take Propecia.
Taking other medications with Propecia
Propecia doesn’t usually affect other meds, (see the section below on Propecia interactions for more information). Tell our doctors about any other medications you are taking though, including vitamins and herbal supplements, just to be sure.
Propecia Interactions
Do not take Propecia if you are taking:
- Finasteride or dutasteride for a prostate problem called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), as this could lead to taking too much of the active drug finasteride.
Who can take Propecia?
Propecia can be taken by adult men over the age of 18, who have male pattern baldness. Propecia isn’t suitable for everyone though, and you should check with our doctors before taking it if you:
- Have issues with erectile dysfunction, as Propecia can cause ED or make it worse for some men, and can reduce the desire for sex
- Have issues with infertility, as Propecia can affect male fertility if taken for a long period by men who have pre-existing risk factors for low fertility
- Have a history of depression, as mood alterations and depression have been reported by some men taking Propecia
- Are going to have a blood test for prostate cancer called PSA (prostate-specific antigen), as Propecia can affect the result of this test
- Are lactose intolerant (Propecia contains lactose)
What happens when you stop taking Propecia?
If you stop taking Propecia, DHT levels will increase in the scalp and male pattern baldness will continue again. It may take three to six months for hair to become visibly thinner and recede, and you are likely to lose all gains after nine to 12 months.
Possible side effects of Propecia
Just like any other meds, Propecia can have side effects. These tend to be mild, and some men won’t get any at all, as it varies from person to person. These were the side effects found in clinical tests of Propecia:

- Pain in the testicles

How long can I keep Propecia tablets for?
Keep Propecia tablets up until the date of expiry on the packaging. Don’t use Propecia after this date (the expiry date refers to the last day of the month).
How to dispose of unused Propecia tablets?
Don’t throw unwanted Propecia tablets out with household waste or flush them down the sink or toilet, as the medication can harm the environment. If you take any expired meds to your local pharmacy, they’ll be able to dispose of them safely.

How safe is Propecia?
Propecia is an effective treatment for male pattern baldness which has gone through extensive clinical testing and is approved by government health agencies worldwide. It’s safe for most men to use, but like any other medication, it can have side effects. These side effects are usually mild, but in some rare cases, they can be more severe. Pregnant women or women who are trying to get pregnant must not touch the tablets as they can cause harm to an unborn baby.
